DEI Statement:

DEI Vision

We recognize:

That diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential to our success as an organization; make us more well-rounded, creative, and capable; and ultimately allow us to more effectively serve our clients.
The effects of systemic power and privilege and work to subvert them.
That diversity includes race, culture, age differing abilities, language ability, gender, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, immigration status, marital status, parental status, and economic and educational background.
We are committed to building a workplace:

That is as diverse as possible given the small size of our organization.
Where each employees’ unique strengths are seen, utilized, and valued.
Where staff, management, board, and volunteers reflect the communities we serve.
With equitable pay for staff so we can hire and retain staff from diverse backgrounds, and allow them to live in a financially sustainable way.
Where our agency vision reflects the community in which we work.
Where our agency vision reflects the staff’s ideas about what LAS would look like if we are successful in our DEI work.

Programs/Services:

Legal Assistance for Seniors provides free legal representation and advice, health insurance counseling, and community education to qualified Alameda County residents.

Ideal Candidate:

Legal Assistance for Seniors is seeking engaged, mission-driven community leaders to join our Board of Directors. As our current board already includes strong legal representation, we are particularly interested in non-lawyers who can bring complementary expertise, lived experience, and community connections.

The ideal candidate is someone who:

  • Is passionate about advancing justice, dignity, and independence for seniors and people with disabilities, particularly low-income residents of Alameda County

  • Brings professional experience in areas such as finance, accounting, healthcare, public health, aging services, social services, nonprofit management, fundraising, marketing, communications, technology, or community organizing

  • Reflects or has strong ties to the diverse communities we serve and values equity, inclusion, and cultural humility

  • Is a strategic thinker who can contribute to organizational governance, financial oversight, and long-term planning

  • Is willing to actively support fundraising efforts, community outreach, and ambassadorship for the organization

  • Can commit the time and energy needed to participate in board meetings, committees, and organizational initiatives

Prior board experience is welcome but not required. We value curiosity, integrity, collaboration, and a genuine commitment to our mission above all else.

Why you should consider joining this board:

Joining the Board of Legal Assistance for Seniors is a chance to make a real difference in the lives of older adults in Alameda County. Board members help ensure access to free legal services, health insurance counseling, and community education that protect seniors’ rights, health, and independence.

You’ll use your skills, perspective, and community connections to strengthen a mission-driven organization, contribute a valued non-legal voice, and help advance equity for underserved communities—while working alongside committed leaders who care deeply about justice and dignity for seniors.

Fundraising/Financial Commitment:

While there is no required financial commitment, we have an annual suggested contribution for the LAS staff holiday present, which is typically around $50. We also highly encourage board members to participate in fundraising efforts/events.
