Mission Statement

Justice At Last is the only nonprofit law firm in the San Francisco Bay Area exclusively serving the legal needs of survivors of human trafficking. We provide clients with free legal services regardless of their age, sex, gender identity, abilities and equity needs, nationality or type of trafficking. We emphasize a trauma informed approach that empowers survivors to seek and achieve justice on their own terms. Justice At Last provides free legal representation that emphasizes dignity and is survivor-centered, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, linguistically appropriate, and rights-based. Our mission is to empower those who have been labor trafficked and commercially sexually exploited by providing access to free comprehensive legal services, advocacy and specialized trainings to help transform survivors’ lives. Our vision is for survivors of human trafficking to have the opportunity to seek justice on their own terms. We envision a world where justice eradicates all forms of slavery – where victims of trafficking are empowered through justice in order to heal and become independent and self-sufficient overcomers who can thrive with dignity.

Our Values are that we believe:
• Immigrant workers should be protected through ensuring safe working conditions, preventing discrimination, including sexual harassment, preventing workplace violence, including sexual assault, eliminating wage theft and fraud, and barring exploitation and human trafficking.
• Agricultural workers are vulnerable to trafficking and H-2A visa holders should be able to change employers.
• Not all adults who work in the commercial sex industry are trafficked.
• “Ending demand” through tactics of increased policing and criminalization of those patronizing consenting adults in the sex trade is a harmful practice.
• Each victim of human trafficking deserves explanation and access to the full range of reproductive health services, including legal abortion and birth control.
• We engage in advocacy on behalf of, and provide services to, trafficked survivors through a humans rights based approach.

Programs/Services:

We specialize in the areas of law identified by our clients and those with lived experience as being the most critical and the least available to survivors of trafficking. These include crime victims’ rights enforcement, records clearance, and immigration relief.

Justice At Last helps close justice gaps for survivors of trafficking in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area by ensuring that every survivor seeking legal services is recognized, supported, and empowered to make informed choices, enforce their rights, resolve legal challenges, and build a stable, resilient future. This intended impact is pursued through two key strategies.

First, we deliver a distinct, three-pronged legal advocacy model that fills gaps often left unaddressed by traditional legal services. This includes: (1) legal navigation and representation to pursue remedies like post-conviction relief and immigration relief; (2) client advocacy and support to keep survivors engaged through trauma-informed relationships; and (3) financial education and advocacy to help survivors realize their rights to restitution, credit repair, and public benefits. Where others stop at referrals, Justice At Last stays with survivors until those legal rights are fully realized.

The second strategy—sector training and capacity building—equips attorneys, law enforcement, and stakeholders to recognize and uphold survivors’ legal rights through survivor-centered, trauma-informed practice. Together, these efforts propel beyond individual representation to advance a future where survivors can achieve justice on their own terms, become independent, and thrive with dignity.

Our strategic interventions provide clients with a platform to be heard, the choice to define and seek their own justice, and an opportunity to change the trajectory of their lives.

Ideal Candidate:

We are seeking passionate, mission-driven individuals to join our Board of Directors as we grow and expand our impact serving survivors of human trafficking. Our goal is to build a diverse, inclusive, and representative Board that reflects the communities we serve and brings a wide range of perspectives, experiences, and expertise.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

Prior Board of Directors experience or demonstrated leadership in professional, community, or volunteer settings
Strong commitment to our mission and a deep respect for the dignity, resilience, and autonomy of trafficking survivors
Lived experience or meaningful connection to the communities we serve is highly valued
Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, issues related to human trafficking, trauma-informed care, and access to justice

Desired Skills & Areas of Expertise
We are especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

Finance, accounting, or nonprofit financial oversight
Strategic planning and organizational growth
Data analysis, impact measurement, or program evaluation
Fundraising, donor development, and philanthropic strategy
Human resources, talent development, or organizational culture
Event planning and community engagement
Marketing, communications, or brand development

Fundraising/Financial Commitment:

All Board Members must make an annual financial contribution at a level that is personally meaningful to them.

All Board Members must participate in all fundraising activities and special events each year. Participation includes attending the event, helping, and or promoting the fundraising activities.
