OneJustice Team at the 2026 MIE National Conference for Legal Aid Managers

“Legal aid leaders can’t build resilient, community-centered organizations if decision-making stays trapped in short-term tactics. Anchoring our leadership decisions in mission (rather than daily survival) is essential to driving true innovation and lasting justice.”
— Martina Cucullu Lim, OneJustice

In the fast-paced world of legal aid, leaders constantly navigate competing priorities: urgent client crises, funding shifts, and operational hurdles. With so many immediate demands, it is easy for leadership decision-making to slip into survival mode—focusing on short-term fixes rather than long-term strategy.

At the 2026 MIE National Conference for Legal Aid Managers, the OneJustice team—Kim Irish Heinonen, Martina Cucullu Lim, and Monica E. Glicken (CEO & General Counsel at Public Law Center)—hosted an interactive session dedicated to breaking that cycle.

Shifting from Short-Term Tactics to Mission-Driven Action

During the session, we explored how legal aid leaders can pivot away from reactive management and build organizations designed for resilience and community-centered impact. Key areas of focus included:

  • Actionable Leadership Frameworks: Tools to help leaders evaluate daily operational choices through the lens of long-term vision rather than immediate convenience.
  • Real-World Case Studies: Practical examples demonstrating how civil legal organizations successfully transformed their strategy to increase community trust and internal capacity.
  • Peer-to-Peer Reflection: Group discussions on navigating staff burnout, organizational change, and resource management without losing sight of fundamental values.

The Path Forward

Building sustainable legal services requires intentional leadership choices every day. When we anchor decisions in our core mission, we create organizations that don’t just react to hardship—they proactively drive systemic change and lasting justice.

Thank you to everyone who joined our session, engaged so openly with the case studies, and shared their practical leadership experiences with us!
