Standing Up for Civil Society: Why Attacks on Nonprofits Threaten Us All

At OneJustice, we believe in the vital role nonprofit organizations play in protecting justice, dignity, and fairness in our communities. That’s why we stand with the coalition of over 3,700 nonprofit and nonpartisan organizations that recently issued this open letter condemning presidential efforts to undermine and punish nonprofit groups.

Why This Matters

Nonprofits are more than service providers — they are watchdogs, advocates, and voices for the voiceless. Whether promoting environmental protection, defending civil rights, offering legal assistance, or organizing communities, nonprofits hold power to build more equitable societies.

To threaten, defund, or dismantle these organizations purely because of their viewpoints is not just an attack on one group — it’s an assault on democracy. The First Amendment protects the right of organizations to speak, act, and advocate. Targeting them for doing so sets a dangerous precedent.

The stakes are high. The very notion of a government that serves the people — and not its own interests — depends on the freedom of organizations to express, challenge, protest, and engage.

Our Call to Action

We join in solidarity with the many organizations that are speaking up about the legal right of nonprofit and advocacy organizations to operate free from politically motivated targetings.

• Collaborating with partners across sectors to protect civic space and accountability

Now is the time for the community to stand together. We must reject efforts to weaken the vital institutions that bridge access, empower voices, and strengthen democracy.
