Reflections from the Deputy Directors Retreat: Confidence, Leadership, and Organizational Strength

Earlier this month, 27 deputy directors and leaders from California legal services organizations, including our very own Leigh Ferrin, gathered for a retreat dedicated to exploring confidence, leadership, and organizational impact.

The retreat invited participants to step back from daily demands and reflect on the deeper questions of leadership. Through interactive exercises and group discussions, attendees examined how confidence, both personal and organizational, is cultivated, sustained, and sometimes challenged.

Key themes emerged throughout the retreat:

  • Individual and collective confidence
  • Inclusivity and feedback.
  • Practical resources and tools

One phrase resonated strongly: HOPE is an action word. For deputy directors, this means embedding hope into leadership practices, organizational culture, and the ways we support both colleagues and the communities they serve.
