Mission Statement

Our mission is to strengthen the legal services sector’s expertise and capacity to advance justice and equity.

Values:

Our vision is a thriving, effective legal services sector that advances a just and equitable society.

DEI Statement:

Equity and Inclusion Policy
Vision: OneJustice commits to transform itself and the civil and legal aid system so that it is more equitable and inclusive.
Mission: Through the work of the Committee for Equity and Inclusion, OneJustice will educate and empower our staff, board members, partners, and network to better understand the impact of power and privilege. As an organization, we promise to engage in more anti-discriminatory practices, policies, procedures, and programming. Additionally, we will also make space, lift up, and center the stories and experiences of legal aid organizations, community based organizations, and community members.
We will work to promote inclusivity and equity in the groups with which we collaborate and the communities we serve. OneJustice is devoted to this work across all projects and partnerships. We understand and acknowledge that:
● This work is urgent, time-sensitive, and a continued learning process
● We will make mistakes, and take responsibility for them
● Until there is complete equity in all spaces, we will not stop

Programs/Services:

OneJustice is a California legal aid support center dedicated to advancing justice and equity for all individuals in California, regardless of their financial or social circumstances. Our mission is to create a more just and equitable California by providing skills and tools to our partners, championing resources for legal services, convening the legal service sector to harness collective power, and sharing insights about systemic trends and solutions. We work with pro bono and nonprofit legal partners to strengthen capacity and expertise. Overall, OneJustice is committed to creating a more fair and accessible legal system for all Californians. Our programs grow executive nonprofit leadership, create high level collaborations between nonprofits and pro bono partners, train the next generation of nonprofit board leaders, and equip nonprofits with the tools and resources to maximize their impact. We also offer expertise and support in areas such as immigration legal services, consumer protection, homelessness prevention, and pro bono project management.

Ideal Candidate:

An ideal board candidate for OneJustice is someone who is passionate about advancing justice and equity, particularly underserved and marginalized communities. Candidates should have a strong commitment to addressing the systemic issues in the legal system and a desire to make a tangible impact on the lives of those in need. The ideal candidate is eager to offer thought partnership to OneJustice leadership and staff on maximizing the impact of California’s legal services organizations and pro bono volunteers and will champion resources for OneJustice through fundraising and friendraising.

Why you should consider joining this board:

Joining the board of OneJustice is a unique opportunity for individuals who are deeply committed to advancing justice and equity for underserved and marginalized communities at the systems wide level. Board service with OneJustice offers opportunities to work with a diverse and motivated board of directors who come from a unique set of professional and life experiences, and have a demonstrated dedication to justice and equity. Joining OneJustice’s board also offers an opportunity to receive OneJustice’s Legal Aid Board Leadership Training and to put what you learn into practice as a board member. Your membership offers a systemic level view of civil legal aid in California, and you will be able to offer your thought partnership on how to improve client outcomes from a macro-level viewpoint, while also helping OneJustice offer direct services providers the crucial support they need to help every individual client and family throughout the state. OneJustice offers board members a variety of opportunities to utilize your unique individual skill set to support our pro bono work and training, legal expertise, financial acumen, and fundraising techniques to support wider California civil legal aid success.

Fundraising/Financial Commitment:

Each board member is expected to make a personally significant donation to OneJustice annually. While each Director is asked to determine what a “personally significant” donation is for them, the Board has also established annual giving targets for Directors based on the setting of their practice or work. Each Director is expected to donate at a level that makes OneJustice one of their largest 2 or 3 charitable investments. OneJustice’s leadership also works closely with each Director to develop an individualized approach to fundraising activities each year, and OneJustice has a development team that provides extensive support and coaching to all Directors throughout the year to ensure they are able to achieve their fundraising goals.
